I took my boys (aged 12, 12, and 15) down to the Texas state capitol today so they could go after some Pokémon. They took a seat on a bench in the shade while I walked a short distance away to take a picture of the Capitol. As I walked back, I saw two teenagers talking to them. So I came up and said, “Can I help you? These are my boys.” The girl replied, “Oh, we’re just visiting Austin and looking for something to do. We were asking if there was something around that we should go see.” So I suggested the
gigantic state capitol building
right behind us, the state history museum (which she vaguely said she thought they saw yesterday), Town Lake and the SRV statue. After a little chit chat, they went on their way.
Then I asked my boys what they said when they walked up. The girl first asked if my boys knew “who made this.” My older son replied that he didn’t know who built the capitol, but the girl said, “No, who made the grass and the trees?” And then they asked if there was anything they’d like them to pray for.
I’m happy you’ve found peace and happiness and joy with your Lord and savior. But no, I’m not interested in you sharing it with me—or my minor sons—without my permission. And then, when I ask you what you are up to, please don’t lie to me. It’s not a very Christian thing to do.

Kudos for suggesting SRV. There’s a whole generating on kids who will likely never know of him.

That just plain creepy. Let your children know that if they hear a blatant lie like that to feel free to speak up about it. I know some kids are reluctant to do so to not be disrespectful.

I teach my kids about all different religions/belief systems/world views and explain to them what I believe and why I believe it. I also teach them the same science lessons I teach my high school students, so they have a fairly good grasp on various topics related to biology and some chemistry.
A girl in my daughter’s first grade class kept trying to proselytize her last year. She asked my daughter where people come from, and my daughter gave her a nice biology lesson, which I thought was funny. She later told my daughter it was wrong not to believe in Jesus, and that it was wrong that my wife and I had tattoos(?!). I f elt sorry for the girl, as I can only imagine what shitheads her parents must be. It did give m e a good opportunity to have a nice conversation with my daughter about tolerance of other people’s beliefs.
Adults hold much more sway over the psyches of kids, so I would have had a much different reaction had an adult acted like this.

Oh these people boil my piss.
Yes, you believe in god, good for you, I don’t so leave me alone. If at some point I want to belie ve in god, I will look you lot up, your in the really big old ornate building aren’t you? So don’t call me, I’ll call you.
One of these days I’m just going to force change the subject into car care, after all cleanliness is next to godliness.

I have a cousin like that - it’s like they “win” by converting folks and that’s kinda the only thing that matters. It’s like a sales gig, all over you if they think they can “win”, then ignore you after you tell them to pound sand.

Well, yeah, that’s literally what they believe their purpose is in life, to gather the flock. If they don’t at least make an attempt, they’re neglecting their duties.

So I don’t talk about it much here (for obvious reason.) but I am one of Jehovah’s Witnesses . So I do go door to door and try to find people who have question.
The reason we go out and try to find people is A. Jesus did to, he didn’t stay locked up in a chapel and wait for people to come to him , and B So me people are afraid of leaving the religion they grew up in, or lack there of, even if they aren’t happy, or have unanswered questions. Coming to them take the males thing easier. I’m not out there to convert people who hav their mind made up. I’m out there to give answers to people who have questions. Anyway I do enjoy talking to people about my religions beliefs. When they want to.
However Targeting children gives me a culty vibe. Children are easier to persuade obviously, and their parents have every right to teach them what ever beliefs they choose. If I’m out in the ministry and a kid comes to the door I ask if an adult is home, as is suggested by our organization. I certainly wouldn’t go out of my way to talk to some random little kids.

Thank you for sharing that. We occasionally get Jehovah’s Witnesses at our door, and I always politely say, “No thank you.” They are always courteous and respectful, and I appreciate that. But these fundamentalist Christians are a dangerous lot. They tend to believe that their version of Christianity is the only one, and that if you don’t join them you’re going to hell. I consider myself somewhat of an agnostic. I haven’t seen or heard (aloud or otherwise) that tells me that there is or is not a God. But, if I find myself ready to find him, it will be a personal journey of my own choosing.

I do believe there is only one acceptable for of Christianity, but part of being a Christian is not oppressing others. If you start thinking you can/should change other people’s minds you end up with wars and violence “in the name of God.”
I also don’t believe you , because he hellfire doctrine was fabricating by the church to strike fear an secure their seat of power. To believe a loving God would punish people forever based on their actions for 50-80 years is pretty messed up.

You want to see a bad sales pitch you should see the Bikers for Jesus (or something like that, I don’t remember the exact name) that use to shout damnation and tell everyone they needed to repent on main street during Daytona Bike Week. Hilariously bad.

I’ve always wanted to ask this but don’t know any Jehovah’s Witnesses : If 144,000 people make it to heaven, and there’s more than 144,000 Jehovah’s Witnesses, why would someone convert?

I’m going to try not to go into too much detail, just the broa strokes, but here goes.
We believe that God still plans for humans to live on a Paradise earth just like he planned for Adam and Eve, and their children, aka us. Psalms 37:11 says “the meek will inherent the earth” . God doesn’t change his plans he told Adam and Eve that humans would live on a paradise earth. N ot that people would be judged for 60 years and then e ither become an angle or burn in Hell forever. God never intended to Humans to go to heaven when they die, or die at all . We don’t believe in any after life for those who aren’t anointed. In Heaven or in Hell. However we do believe in a resurrection after Amagedon, which won’t be the destruction of Earth but rather the destruction of false religion, along with national governments and when Satan will be locked away and Jesus will rule as King. See most religions teach that God is in control of the Earth now but that’s not the case Satan is the one pulling the strings right now. God is allowing it so that we can see what a mess things become when we don’t do things his way.
The 144,000 are anointed ones who do go to heaven will be there to guide humans on earth because they will have a better understanding what it’s like to be human than any Angle ever could. Another point I really like is that most people don’t want to go to heaven. Even people with fists don’t want to die, because it is an unnatural desire for humans to want to go to heaven. We want to live on Earth because that is our purpose.
Think about the times Jesus resurrected people while he was on Earth. If those people were happy angles in heaven why would he drag them back down to earth just to suffer again ? And why would he show that he has the power to bring back life if he never planned to do it again? It was some EPIC FORSHADOWING lol.
Sorry that was a bit of a rant. I hope I answered your question. If you have more check out JW.org. All of our publications and a copy of the Bible are available there.

Got it. I wondered how that worked out doctrinally.
I won’t be converting any time soon (ever) but that had always been a point of curiosity to me, I appreciate the response. Thanks!

And to answer your question, I’m a full, card carrying heathen.
